Software-defined networking (SDN) gives an application all the necessary intelligence to address, control and coordinate the features of each individual IP/Ethernet switch in the network.

So SDN no longer lets the network switches sort things out by themselves as in a conventional IT network. It takes matters in its own hands.

At SDNsquare, we have tuned SDN for media applications, adding an additional layer. This allows a concerted end-to-end control of network behavior along the whole path of a media flow. To do so, our technology activates and deploys hidden features of network switches, making them QoS-capable and optimal for media transport.

 

THE SDN STACK GUARANTEES PREDICTABILITY

On top of the SDN infrastructure sits the SDN application. This is the brain, the intelligence of the network that knows all about media contents. It controls and virtualizes all important end-to-end network functionality.

To make the IP network optimal for media transport, this application will enforce the predictability and end-to-end QoS. This includes:

  • Provisioning a guaranteed high-bandwidth
  • Organizing the time-critical data transfers
  • Organizing an efficient use of the bandwidth
  • Intelligent load balancing over all available paths
  • Avoiding interference between traffic flows
  • Keeping the latency and jitter low and predictable
  • Accounting for scalability

THE SDNSQUARE GRID APPLICATION HAS TWO MAIN FUNCTIONS

 

SDN 2. ENFORCE GUARANTEED END-TO-END QOS ALONG THE SELECTED PATH:

SDN 1. PATH SELECTION:

The application selects a path for each media flow through the IP network, connecting the source and destination end-points.

This includes selecting the necessary physical links, but also installing the queue on each link that will be dedicated to that specific media flow so as to avoid any interference.

The SDNsquare software performs all necessary traffic engineering on the flow along the path to guarantee the required throughput.
